On May 20, 2023, we traveled from San Diego to Cabo San Lucas, Mexico to see our friends Michael Bottari and his significant other, Madeline.
The Cape Hotel
Michael suggested we stay at The Cape (Thomson) Hotel, and his recommendation was spot on. The Cape isn’t a stereotypical Cabo hotel. Instead, it’s set back from the tourist area and very classy. With its beautiful restaurants and clear-blue beach, The Cape is one of the most beautiful hotels we’ve ever experienced. It also boasts a stunning fine dining restaurant atop a cliff where we had a very early “anniversary” dinner.
Here’s a video of our hotel, filmed and narrated by Peter Kelly!

Cabo, La Paz, El Pescadero, and Todos Santos
We are grateful that Michael and Madeline showed us around Cabo. We didn’t have to waste time in the tourist traps and instead saw what it was like to really live there. Michael cooked us his famous spaghetti and meatballs, and they spent several days taking us to their local haunts. They took us swimming in the beautiful La Paz beach and to the quaint town of Todos Santos. Along the way, we stopped at a unique restaurant/gallery in El Pescadero called Art & Beer. It was in the middle of nowhere and owned by a mysterious former hippie named Alfredo. His sculptures, mixed media art, huge drinks, food and cantankerous attitude made the whole experience even more interesting. On our last day, Peter played golf at the swanky Cabo del Sol and Cabo Real courses, and Monica took a Mexican Street Taco cooking class. Of course, we had to go to Sammy Hagar’s Cabo Wabo restaurant and buy a bunch of souvenirs for our rock music-loving friends.

What surprised us was that Cabo is such a beautiful oasis in the middle of the dessert, and we left wanting to return and buy vacation property. (You’ll hear this sentiment often during our trips, particularly from Monica whose wanderlust hasn’t declined since she was five years old.)
